Hellmut Arthur Albin Hartwig was born in Berlin in 1910, and was a professor in the Foreign Languages and Literatures department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1948 to 1976. He was known for his innovative teaching methods and for a series of intensive German language institutes and exchanges that he established and administrated between 1961 and 1966 during his tenure at Carbondale. One of the institutes was established with the support of the United States Office of Education....
